As the summer approaches and the days get longer and hotter, there’s nothing more exciting than opening up your pool.  Say goodbye to days spent curled up on the couch and hello to lounging on a pool float.

Unfortunately, pools can be high-maintenance. However, there are plenty of easy ways to ensure that your pool is the summer paradise that you dream about all winter.

If you’re not sure what goes into pool care, be sure to keep reading for some of the most important aspects to pool maintenance.

1. Skim and Scrub

One of the most important aspects of pool maintenance is to keep it free of leaves, debris, and dirt. This should be performed daily for optimal cleanliness.

When leaves sit in the water for too long, they can sink to the bottom and affect your pool’s chemical levels.

Also, scrubbing the interior of your pool can help reduce algae or dirt that has built up on the sides. Don’t have time to scrub often? Let Aqua Premier Pool Services handle that for you.

2. Check the Chemical Levels

When it comes to swimming pool care, chemicals like chlorine help kill bacteria and make your pool safe. Without chemicals, your pool would likely grow full of algae and bacteria very quickly.

You should check the levels of your pool at least once a week, if not more frequently.

Testing strips can give you insight into chemical levels, as well as the pH balance. This information is detrimental in terms of cleaning a swimming pool, as you’ll need to add chemicals or increase the alkaline levels.

3. Clean the Filter Regularly

As you scrub the sides of your pool and send dirt into your pool, your filter will naturally collect any buildup and remove it from the water.

Because of this, your filter will subsequently become dirty. If you don’t clean it, it won’t be able to collect any more dirt! How often you clean the filter depends on the size of your pool and how clean it is.

Some recommend cleaning the filter every six months, while others recommend rinsing once a week. Again, this depends on factors like size, use, and algae.

4. Know How and When to Winterize Your Pool

If you live somewhere where the seasons change drastically and you can’t keep your pool open year-round, you’ll need to learn how to properly close your pool.

It’s recommended that you close your pool when the temperatures reach a consistent 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Next, you’ll need to go through the process of closing.

From testing the water levels, shocking the pool, and cleaning the filter, you’ll also need to shut off all pool equipment before covering the water.
