In August 1897, the British Indian Army created its 36th regiment composed of entirely Jat Sikhs. The five companies of the 36th Sikhs were sent to the northwest frontier posts of British India Samana Hills, Sahtop Dhar, Kurag, Sangar, and Saragarhi.

Saragarhi was a small village situated in the Saman Range near to the border of Kohat. From time to time, the British personnel got attacked by the Pashtun tribals from Afghanistan resulting in their loss in trades. To monitor the movement of Afghanies in the Kohat and near posts, the Britishers built Fort Saragarshi, Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan in Samana Range. By the use of the Heliographic method, the Fort Saragarhi used to send the information to the forward posts of Lockhart and Gulistan.

Ishar Singh was a British Indian Army soldier posted to the Fort Saragarhi due to his direct conflict with the East India company. Ishar was a proud soldier with the oath of dying on the battlefield and live by strictly following his community rules. On 12 September 1897, the Afghani tradesmen with 10,000 to 14,000 soldiers attacked the Fort Saragarhi. Only 21 soldiers were present on the Fort with some of them never fought in the battle and a signal decoder.

Habilda Ishar Singh informed the British officers about the attack, but the soldiers cannot reach there before 8 hours of journey. Ishar Singh with the soldiers decided to fight the battle instead of showing their back. They engaged the Afghanies for 7 long hours and killed 600 soldiers of the enemy army with nearly 1000 wounded.

They knew that the enemy they were trying to fight with cannot be defeated, but the brave soldiers decided give their final blow and saved the post of Saragarhi. All 21 soldiers were martyred during the battle and were owned by the British Army later.

Review:

Though the movie contains Parineeti Chopra as the lead actress with Akshay Kumar, the main focus will be on the character of Akshay Kumar as Havildar Ishar Singh. It also through some rays on the Sikh community and their customs. The Sikh community celebrates 12 September as Saragarhi day every year to commemorate the Battle of Saragarhi.

Kesari(saffron) is the movie which reflects the history and the braveness shown by the Indian soldiers. It shows a different setup of the actor Akshay Kumar and his way from traditional to method acting. From his last movie Robot 2.0, Akshay has moved his way towards the content filled movies.

From his previous movies like Robot 2.0, padman and housefull, Akshay Kumar seems to be shifting towards method acting and contentful movies. Akshay Kumar said that being a part of this movie truly made him proud, despite his injury during a fight scene he continued to shoot without resting. Kesari will not face a big clash as the movie Junglee will be releasing on 29th March and it will get plenty of time jump on Box office like Akshay’s previous movies.
