According to eMarketer forecasts, this year the number of smartphone users will reach two billion. Every second mobile user will have a smartphone by 2018.

If you are a marketer, developer, designer of mobile applications, or a representative of a company that needs a presence on mobile devices of the target audience, then the rapid spread of mobile technologies directly affects your interests.

But it is not so much statistical calculations and numbers that are important, as design and development trends, on which the mobile sphere is extremely dependent. The Internet of Things, smart home apps, DIY constructors – all these and many other trends are leaving a noticeable imprint on the mobile landscape.

According to Statista, global downloads will reach 268.69 billion by 2020. But what development trends will shape the mobile app ecosystem for the foreseeable future?

This year, many industries have seen ubiquitous adoption of applications. Many companies see apps as a way to increase revenue, engage customers, and optimize employee performance.

In the recent past, representatives of many new industries began to master applications, incl. small online and offline retailers; and local manufacturers who were previously reluctant to open doors to new digital products. With the proliferation of precision localization technologies that are being integrated into mobile apps, more on-premises organizations will need a mobile presence.

1) Network devices

Almost no home automation is complete without a mobile app. All networked devices in the home, workplace, or car have an app-based control mechanism.

Applications exist in almost every field of activity and are increasingly becoming the subject of everyday life.

Example. The company needed a simple development to track performance. Such an application does not need the complex UX elements that are found in consumer software. With builders capable of creating simple applications, a user can make their own application and share it with others.

It all started with a flat design and a hamburger icon hiding the menu list. In the future, various design trends replaced each other, along the way improving the quality of the interaction experience. Flat design was intended to simplify UX and return the general direction of design to its origins.

Other trends have not only reaffirmed this principle of simplicity and usability, but have always introduced something new to grab attention and make designs more memorable. There are more visual splashes, fancy fonts, grid design, visual storytelling, split screens, all kinds of scrolling effects, effective microinteractions, and finally Material Design, with some shade of flatness.

It appears that experimentation and the search for new forms of UX will continue.

4) Augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR)

The scope of these technologies is not limited to just games. This provides retailers with the opportunity to transfer the real store environment to the screen of a mobile device and thus view the entire available range of products. Likewise, the property buyer is provided with a 360-degree view of the potential home’s premises. In educational applications (with AR and VR technology), various interactive elements can be added to the classroom on the screen.

The possibilities are many. A football fan on a smartphone screen will feel the atmosphere of the stadium without buying a ticket and attending a match. There is a potential opportunity for a test drive of a new instance of the automotive industry without the need to go to a dealership.
