Did you know that mattresses are supposed to last between 7 to 10 years? Contrary to popular belief, purchasing mattresses isn’t a one-and-done deal!

You might’ve recently noticed that your old mattress is on its way out, so you’re prepared to buy a replacement. But now, you’re stuck with an old lumpy mattress and you don’t know what to do with it.

Here are 4 tips you should know for getting rid of your old mattress!

1. Check Your Warranty

You’ve probably already thrown out this piece of paper, but not to worry. Take a look at the tag on your mattress and see what the manufacturer’s name is. Then go online and Google it.

Many manufacturers will offer a warranty of 5 to 10 years. So if you’re getting rid of your mattress within this time frame, then you’re in luck. Many warranties will include both mattress removal and replacement, so you’ll get a new mattress by barely doing a thing!

In other cases, the warranty will only cover the replacement and not the removal. If this is your situation, then you’ll want to check out our other tips.

2. Reach Out to Recycling Programs

We keep throwing out more and more junk, which only contributes to our landfills reaching capacity. This is why programs aim to make it easier to dispose of things by offering recycling services!

Again, use Google for this. Just search something like “mattress recycling program” with your zip code or city. If you’re lucky, your local recycling program will pick your mattress up for free or for a small fee (under $40).

3. Donate or Sell It

If your mattress is still in decent condition, consider either donating or selling it. You can try things like Facebook Marketplace or the Salvation Army. Either way, the recipient will usually come get the mattress themselves so you don’t have to lift a finger.

4. Buy a New Mattress

Because you’ll need a new mattress to replace the old one, naturally, you’ll have to shop around. Some people opt to save money by buying secondhand, but this doesn’t really help you when it comes to old mattress removal.

Instead, you should buy new. Purchasing during a mattress sale can be beneficial, as you’ll get a quality new mattress at low prices.

More importantly, with most companies, when they deliver your new mattress, they’ll take away your old one for free! That way, you don’t have to deal with trashing your mattress on your own.
